Former Anderson University softball star Sara Rychener's No. 25 was retired this weekend by Raven coach
Larry Holloway.
Holloway presented the jersey to Rychener's
mother at her funeral on Tuesday. Rychener passed away last
Friday due to complications after giving birth to her first
child, Jackson David.
"She was an inspiration to the whole team,"
Holloway said of Rychener, who graduated in 1999. "She had good
beliefs and lived right. She will be sorely missed."
Rychener played for the Ravens from 1996-99
and was the ace pitcher on the 1999 team that went 35-10 and
advanced to the NCAA Div. III national tournament in California.
During her senior year, she was 21-6 with a
2.15 earned run average. Over her career, Rychener compiled a
62-32 record with a 2.30 ERA and 180 strikeouts. She holds the
AU record for career wins (62), career ERA (2.30), career
strikeouts (180), season wins (21) and season ERA (1.76 in
1998).
"As a pitcher she was one of the best ones
we've ever had if not the best," Holloway said.
